This post explores my attempt to get bidirectional bluetooth communication going between an android device and a linux computer (in this case a Raspberry Pi running Raspbian). This post is part of the documentation of knowledge acquired while building an “AquaPi” – a raspberry pi that will act as a control center for an aquarium. Here is a video showing a working example:

• On the raspberry pi: setting up and using pybluez

Note: these instructions have also been confirmed to work on an ubuntu workstation with in-built bluetooth support.

First, plugin the bluetooth dongle and fire up the raspberry pi. Next, install the pre-requisites to get bluetooth support on the raspberry pi by running:

K-pop (an abbreviation of Korean pop) (Korean: 가요 kayo) is a musical genre and subculture originating in South Korea which comprises a wide spectrum of musical and visual elements.

Although in a bigger scope K-pop may include any genre of South Korean popular music, outside of the country the term is more commonly used for songs sung by systematically trained K-Pop idols signed with management agencies such as SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment and JYP Entertainment.

In 1992, dance and rap music was brought into the genre by Seo Taiji & Boys, whose experimentation with a different variety of musical sounds had ushered in the beginning of modern K-pop.

Since the mid-2000s, the Korean Wave has driven a visible spread of K-pop across the Pacific Rim, before subsequently reaching out to the Americas, Eurasia, and North Africa.

According to the news agency Reuters, the success of PSY’s single “Gangnam Style” has led to other K-pop artists positioning themselves for a similar breakthrough in the U.S. music industry, as Big Bang, G-Dragon and Girls’ Generation made their debut on the Billboard 200 albums’ chart and 2NE1’s performance in New Jersey was selected by The New York Times as one of the “Best Concerts of 2012”.

By tapping into social media networks, the ability of K-pop to reach a previously inaccessible audience via the Internet is driving a shift in the exposure and popularity of the genre.

1. Compile with full size optimization.
2. Use local variables whenever possible.
3. Use the smallest applicable data type. Use unsigned if applicable.
4. If a non-local variable is only referenced within one function, it should be

needed by the application. Alternatively, concatenate all the CODE segments
into one declaration and it will be done automatically.
14. Code reuse is intra-modular. Collect several functions in one module (i.e., in one
file) to increase code reuse factor.
15. In some cases, full speed optimization results in lower code size than full size
optimization. Compile on a module by module basis to investigate what gives the
best result.
16. Optimize C_startup to not initialize unused segments (i.e., IDATA0 or IDATA1 if all
variables are tiny or small).
17. If possible, avoid calling functions from inside the interrupt routine.
18. Use the smallest possible memory model.
